The Naturopaths’ View On Root Cause of Flea and Tick Infestation
Fleas and ticks live in the environment and NOT on your pet! (They just feed on them). If you want to control insects, you need to understand them. It is safer and easier to keep the population in check when you follow the rhythm of nature.
In the last few decades, we have become overrun with ticks. This is due, in part, to climate change, the expanded human population into rural areas and overuse of pesticides. That’s what works against us. Now, let's turn the table and look at what nature can do to help control ticks.
1. Nurture Backyard Nature
Birds, opossums and some lizards love eating ticks. Ticks live in the tree canopy and drop onto warm-blooded animals.
Possums can eat as many as 5000 ticks in a season, according to the Cary Institute of Ecological Studies. Instead of using pesticides, which affects all backyard wildlife, encourage your furry allies to stay by using feeders and bird baths.
2. Natural Repellants that Pack a Punch. (Fleas & Ticks)
White Vinegar and Salt. Mix 1/2 cup salt to 1 gal. vinegar, add 10 drops of any good quality evergreen, and/or mint essential oil. Spray steps, walkways, driveways, and patios. Kills weeds too. Repeat once a month in season.
Diatomaceous Earth (DE) Make sure it is 100% food grade. I use Earthworks Health. A clean, inexpensive product with a “1001” uses. I mix 1 gallon of water, 10 drops cedarwood essential oil and 1 cup DE. I pour it into a garden sprayer and spray the lawn. You can use it dry around the exterior foundation in the spring and fall. Use a mask when using the dry powder. DE is made of diatom skeletons. Even in powder form, it can abrade soft tissue, like sinuses. Fleas and ticks need moisture. DE dehydrates ticks and even empales fleas. Sounds a bit gruesome, but when it comes to chemical warfare, it is a lesser evil!
3. The Energy of Insect Control
The concept of energy work may be new to some readers. I thought this may be a good place to introduce the idea because many of you are frustrated with keeping your pet pest free without the harmful effects of pesticides.
The other day I passed a truck with a sign that boosted itself as being World Wide Exterminators. “That’s horrible”, I thought. The intention of that company is to destroy all insects worldwide, without considering the consequences of that action.
To introduce you to the mindset of how energy works in our world, you must understand two words:
Your thoughts are actually things. They are made up of focused energy. What drives the focused energy is emotion…and that creates an intention! If your constant intention is for death and destruction, that is what will manifest in your life. It's like dropping a pebble in a pond. The rings produced by the initial impact fan out far and wide. I know that you want to be rid of parasites, but first, consider the kinder options that we talked about. Don’t use a hurricane to put out a match! This brings me to our second word…
This is the force that connects everything. An understanding of true compassion, at its deepest level, realizes that all boundaries are an illusion. Honor that fact that parasites have their place in the world and hold your thoughts of compassion that they may go in peace.
