Our dogs are part of our families. They travel with us, explore the great outdoors with us, lay in our laps and watch TV with us, and they often sleep in the bed with us as well. We want our pets protected from the discomfort and diseases that insects carry, so we head out to the pet store and pick up one of those little packets. We read the instructions carefully and apply the liquid between their shoulder blades. We place it there so that the dog can’t lick it off. We wear gloves; careful not to get the chemicals on our own skin. We worry about what those chemicals may be doing to our dogs. And we certainly don’t want these chemical on our couch or in our bed!

And we should worry. Certain chemicals in these traditional flea and tick medications can cause rashes, nausea and vomiting, seizures, and other neurological symptoms. Just like with humans, a dog’s skin absorbs what it comes in contact with. Many chemicals are more easily absorbed through the skin than if they are ingested. If you wouldn’t put it on your skin, you shouldn’t put it on your dog’s either.

How do you keep your dog safe from insects? Traditionally, there haven’t been many natural options out there. We now know that many plants have natural insect repellant properties. Essential oils processed from these types of plants have been shown to be very effective insect repellants. An application of our all natural natural tick repellent for dogs made from essential plant oils, on yourself, your family, and your dog will help to keep unwanted insects at bay for 4 hours.

It’s also a good idea to help to deter these insects from your yard in the first place. During the growing season, you can help to lessen the amount of fleas, ticks, and mosquitoes that both you and your dog come into contact with while you’re at home. Plantings of pennyroyal mint, lavender, basil, marigolds and rosemary around your property, in pots on your deck, and near your doors will help to prevent some of the exposure in your yard. Standing water is a breeding ground for mosquitoes; make sure to keep empty containers free of water sources.

So whether you’re heading out to your back yard or to a great adventure in the woods, you can feel secure knowing that you and your pet are protected against bothersome insects as well as dangerous chemicals. Contact us for more information or to place an order.
